RNAS CULDROSE ENGINEERS DRIVE IN THE FAST LANE

Published: 25 Jul 2017

Eight engineers from RNAS Culdrose recently volunteered at the ‘Greenpower’ car racing event held in Newquay. The day brought together students from local primary schools with the aim of inspiring them to be our budding engineers of the future. Over 2000 children took part in the challenge and they were tasked in designing, building and racing an electric car against each other.

Greenpower aims to change current views about engineering and promoting it as a dynamic and interesting career choice for any young person.

The Naval volunteers were kept very busy on the day overseeing the cars were safe to race, helping with marshalling, timing and initiating the races. Next year the base also hopes to assist the schools with the design and build phase prior to race day.

Lieutenant Helen Forster who led the team from RNAS Culdrose said: ‘This was a fantastic event for us to get involved with; seeing what the engineers of the future had designed and watching them test their designs through racing is the best kind of STEM activity.”
