Gliding Awards Scheme
- More than 550 students have completed the gliding training courses under
the FAAOA Gliding Awards Scheme since it started in 1986.
- Many have since become naval pilots or observers or have entered careers
in aviation or in the space and defence industries.
Objectives of the Award Scheme
- To provide a source of potential pilots and observers for the Royal Navy.
- To provide young men and women with an exciting challenge and leisure time
activity designed to encourage a sense of responsibility and the motivation to
prove leadership qualities.
What do the Awards cover?
- Gliding courses of up to eight days in length at one of three locations -
Royal Naval Air Station, Yeovilton; Royal Naval Air Station, Culdrose; and Lee
on Solent.
- Intensive training which should lead to solo flight in a glider.
- Food and accommodation at a Royal Naval Air Station or Establishment and
free rail travel.
Who is Eligible?
Young persons (male or Female) who are -
- Between the ages of 16 and 19
- Interested in becoming a Naval pilot or observer
- A British or Commonwealth citizen
- In full time education at school, University or college
or
- A member of CCF (RN or Army) or the Sea Cadet Corps
How is the Scheme supported?
- The Awards are sponsored by the Fleet Air Arm officers' Association
through the Aviation Scholarship Trust
- The Trust also receives donations from industrial and commercial companies
in the aerospace and defence industries as well as from individual members of
the FAAOA
